Olive Leaf Extract

This unique plant is quickly gaining popularity as nature's powerful defender against free radicals and inflammation

Move over wheatgrass, olive leaf is the new green super food. The plant has been used for centuries in countries such as Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Morocco, Turkey and Tunisia. There are over 200 references to olives in the Bible, suggesting its medicinal use since ancient times. In recent years, science has verified many of its traditional applications.

Bursting with Antioxidants
Olive leaf is an exceptionally powerful antioxidant. This antioxidant action protects the body from free radical damage and premature ageing, as well as heart disease and cancer. In a 2007 study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (31:1), 55 medicinal herbs were tested for their antioxidant capacity and olive leaf came out on top. A study conducted at Southern Cross University in Australia showed that liquid olive leaf extract has an antioxidant capacity 400 percent greater than vitamin C and almost double that of green tea and grape seed extracts. Since free radical damage is involved in many disease processes, this explains olive leaf extract's success in countering them.

Now olive leaf extract is also being praised for its superior ability to soothe the inflammatory response. Dr Lesley Stevenson from Southern Cross University states: 'Olive leaf extracts have potential as an intervention in all disease processes that involve inflammation, notably cardiovascular disease, arthritis and cancer'. Olive leaf extract is also a rich source of many valuable nutrients including vitamin C, betacarotene, zinc, iron, selenium, chromium and healthy plant phenols.

Humble Herb Extraordinary Usage

The olive tree has held an important place in Mediterranean cultures for centuries, where it has been traditionally used to prevent and treat an extensive range of infections.
Today, modern medicine is discovering many more uses for this plant, with researchers claiming that Mediterranean people have healthier hearts, lower cholesterol and less incidence of heart disease.

The discovery of the medicinal effects of Olive Leaf Extract can be traced back to more than 160 years ago when it was successfully administered to cure severe cases of fever and malaria.

The key healing ingredient was believed to be a bitter substance in the leaves. Named 'Oleuropein' decades later, it has been scientifically proven to be effective against many health conditions.

Olive Oil
Extra virgin olive oil is a functional food known for its high levels of monounsaturated fatty acids. It is also a source of phytochemicals such as polyphenolics, flavonoids, squalene, beta carotene and vitamin E.

Olive oil is an important part of the Mediterranean diet and has been scientifically investigated for its health benefits, including reducing risk factors for heart disease, prevention of certain cancers, and improving immune system and inflammatory responses.

Olive Leaf Extract Even Healthier
These polyphenolics have also been identified in olive leaves, but at a level 30 times higher than in extra virgin olive oil. Olive leaves contain about 100 natural compounds and its phenolics and flavonoids are strong antioxidants.

The most widely researched olive polyphenolics are oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, caffeic acid and luteolin. These compounds are partly responsible for the exceptional antioxidant activity of olive products.

Oleuropein - The Main Polyphenolic
Originally isolated in 1908, oleuropein is responsible for the bitter taste of olives and olive leaves.

It has a variety of roles including anti-inflammatory activity, dilating blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, preventing platelet aggregation (reducing risk of blood clots), calming nervous and muscular spasms and antimicrobial activity against a variety of viruses, bacteria, yeasts and fungi.

Synergistic Effects
However, research has shown that the complete synergy of the compounds in olive leaves increases its effectiveness*. The phenolic compounds in olive leaves when combined have very strong free radical scavenging capacity.

It is hardly surprising, then, that research has shown that olive leaf extract has had positive effects on heart health, diabetes, fever, arthritis, skin diseases, infections (including those caused by viruses) and fatigue. Many report an improvement in energy levels, sleep and overall sense of well-being.

Clinical studies have confirmed olive leaf extract's benefits when taken for high blood pressure and osteo and rheumatoid arthritis. Many people take it as an immune system booster to ward of colds and _u as well.

Safety Notes
Before taking olive leaf extract, you should check with your healthcare professional if you are taking other medications.

When first taking olive leaf extract, there is a small chance you may suffer from some symptoms such as fatigue, headaches or flu-like symptoms. This is your body detoxifying as it kills off a large number of bacteria in a short period of time. Drink lots of water throughout the day to help relieve the symptoms.
